Certificate II in Auslan

There’s now a Cairns-based course that keeps you in touch with the latest communication methods for people with hearing impairments. Get a complete understanding of Auslan, with 6 separate subjects on the language that progressively build up a comprehensive knowledge and skills base. Plus with an additional 4 subjects that provide an insight into the history and culture of the deaf community, it’s the perfect course to connect in more ways than one.



Entry Requirements

Applicants should have writing skills adequate for assignment writing, be able to participate in group work and have an interest in Auslan and the Deaf Community.

Program Duration

Part Time       18 months
Classes are held in the evenings from 6.00pm – 9.00pm and some Saturdays 9.00am – 4.00pm.

Stage 1 – Introduction to Auslan, Auslan 1 and Auslan 2 over 1 semester.
Stage 2 – Auslan 3, Auslan 4, Auslan 5 over 1 semester
Stage 3 – An Overview of Deaf History, Team Building Communication, Introduction to Language & Terminology and Deaf Culture & Community. Some of these programs may be offered on line therefore can be completed at student’s discretion.


Program Articulation

The Certificate III, IV in Auslan and the Diploma in Auslan are available at many Institutes. The NAATI-accredited Diploma in Auslan Interpreting course can also be undertaken when Auslan skills are at an advanced level.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process where a student may be granted credit or partial credit towards a qualification in recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience and/or formal training.

How to Apply

Please complete an Enrolment Selection Form and send it to the Southbank Institute of Technology with the appropriate payment. If an enrolment form is not attached, ensure that your name, address, phone number and email address are placed on the list by either emailing us or telephoning the Client Contact Centre on 13 72 48.

The cost of each stage is approximately:

Stage 1 Full rate: $220.39
Concession rate: $128.74
Fees include textbook and materials but does not include Auslan dictionary.

Stage 2 Full rate: $370.00 (approximately)
Concession rate: $235.00 (approximately)
Fees include Residential Weekend Conference (excluding catering) and materials.

Stage 3 Costs will vary depending on the individual courses nominated.


Please note, all programs are subject to a $14 Administration Fee per year, payable on enrolment.
