Southbank Institute graduate awarded at Shanghai World Expo
Southbank Institute of Technology graduate Jack Quan Liu has received top honours at the Queensland-China Education and Training Awards for Excellence at the Shanghai World Expo 2010.
Jack, from Shandong China, was awarded Alumnus of the Year in the Vocational and Education and Training category, which recognises the outstanding achievements of a Chinese alumnus and their contribution to Queensland’s international education and training industry.
Jack studied for two years at Southbank Institute completing a Certificate III in Patisserie and a Diploma of Hospitality in 2008, before going on to study at Griffith University.
Southbank Institute’s Acting Institute Director Jodi Schmidt said the awards celebrated the outstanding contribution of international students like Jack.
“As part of World Expo the awards focus on our successful education partnerships with China and Jack’s award highlights the strong educational relationship with Southbank Institute.
"Our congratulations go to Jack Quan Lin in receiving this important accolade,” Ms Schmidt said.
“In addition to his outstanding academic achievements, Jack was an active member of our internal student community, providing support and assistance to our new international students by actively participating in faculty mentoring programs and orientation activities,” she said.
“As the leading provider of vocational education and training in Queensland, Southbank Institute fosters a strong relationship with China’s education sector, which is reflected in the number of Chinese international students studying here, who make up about 17 per cent of our international student population.
“We have students from more than 85 countries, and China is at the top of the list.”
The awards, which started in 2005, celebrate the depth and diversity of Queensland`s successful education and training partnerships with China, linking to the Queensland-Shanghai Sister State Agreement which has been in place for 21 years.
Last year more than 17,000 Chinese students were studying or training in Queensland.
The World Expo runs from May 1 until October 31 and involves more than 200 nations and organizations and is expected to attract more than 70 million visitors.
Queensland Week was held from June 20 to 26.
