Business and Community Education

The Faculty of Business and Community Education is committed to providing a focus on general education. This approach reinforces the belief that a broad educational element complements more specialised training, giving our graduates the flexibility required to take on the challenges of a demanding career. Four schools, each with a specific focus, are represented within the faculty:

School of Business and Information Technology

In today’s fast-paced business world, a solid grounding in information technology is essential. The School of Business and Information Technology provides the knowledge and skills - both technology and business-based - to equip students with relevant qualifications to help them reach their potential and career goals.

Programs in areas such as Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Multimedia, Project Management, and Sales Management, are delivered in state-of-theart facilities.

School of Community and General Education

The programs offered by the School of Community and General Education broaden and deepen students’ understanding of the environment in which they live and work. The school provides a range of programs that challenge and enable students to pursue their own personal and professional development, in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Indigenous Australian Peoples Unit

Programs are designed specifically to support and address the training needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The unit is supported by the indigenous community and operates in partnership with a Community Advisory Council, with representation from industry, government departments and organisations in the community, and support and advice from community Elders.

Central to the school’s mission is to provide an encouraging environment for students to reach their goals in vocational training and education. Programs are offered in areas of study such as Cultural Studies, Education, Community Services, Business Administration, Hospitality, Sport and Recreation, and Training and Assessment.

School of Language and Literacy

International student learns to communicate in English

I studied the Foundation Course for International Students at Southbank Institute for six months and enjoyed my classes immensely. I found all my lecturers to be generous, kind and patient with all the students.

My lecturers helped me to successfully complete my studies.

I learned how to communicate in English in written and oral forms, and also learned computer skills.

I highly recommend Southbank Institute as a place to study.

Foundation Course for International Students graduate

The School of Language and Literacy is committed to setting a high benchmark in English language and literacy education for many sectors of the community, including adults, migrants, people with disabilities, migrants and overseas students.

Students require language and literacy support for many different reasons. Programs have been tailored for students’ different needs such as those who are preparing for tertiary or vocational study, entry to the armed forces, those looking to improve their communication skills in the workplace, or students who wish to work in the rewarding fields of adult literacy and migrant support.

For many years we have been setting the standard in English language and literacy education for adults, migrants, the disabled and overseas students studying in Australia.

We are the only education provider in Queensland offering an interpreting training program and professional development programs in health interpreting and legal interpreting. We are also the state's only provider of the Australian Sign Language (AUSLAN) training program for working with the hearing impaired. Whatever challenges our students face, they're on the road to success with Southbank Institute.
