Volunteer Tutor Program
Southbank Institute’s Volunteer and Home Tutor program helps volunteers develop tutoring skills to assist migrants, those with minimal or disrupted schooling or a disability, to acquire English language skills. Volunteers are trained to tutor in one-on-one situations and in the classroom.
The home tutor scheme supports the Federal Government’s Adult Migrant Education Program (AMEP), and provides training to volunteer tutors so that they in turn can assist non-English speakers. As part of the AMEP, new migrants or refugees who can not access classroom English lessons due to pregnancy, lack of childcare or a disability, undergo a literacy assessment and are matched with a volunteer home tutor.

Volunteer Tutoring is extremely rewarding. Courses generally run over five weeks and include 25 hours of supervised practical training to help you gain confidence applying the skills you learned in the classroom. Two training sessions are run each year. These are usually in February and August.
