The Queensland School of Printing and Graphic Arts (QSPGA) is recognised by industry as the leading provider of printing and graphic arts training in the state.

Printing apprenticeship opens up whole new world

Three years after completing her apprenticeship in graphic arts, 24 year old Hannah Leary is a pre-press manager for one of Brisbane’s leading printers, Scanlon Printing.

“My apprenticeship opened a whole new world for me and showed me the many different facets of the printing industry,” Hannah said.

“My study at Southbank Institute’s Queensland School of Printing and Graphic Arts, combined with the mentoring I received in industry, has given me the confidence to take on more responsibility.”

For Hannah ensuring a graphic designer’s concept becomes a printed reality is the best part of her work.

“Every job has its own character and you have to rely on the whole printing team to create a successful job,” she said.

Hannah is keen to encourage other young people to work in the printing industry.

“It’s such an exciting industry, always advancing and changing,” she said.

“At the moment, we are looking for young people who are creative, enthusiastic and able to think on their feet to take on the challenge of learning about today’s printing industry.”

With teachers who are committed educators as well as experienced professionals in their respective fields, combined with modern equipment and facilities, QSPGA creates a learning environment that is as close as possible to actual workplace conditions.

As well as maintaining the highest education standards, our teachers are continually upgrading their technical knowledge to keep up with the rapid changes in this high-tech industry.

Staff regularly contribute articles to industry publications such as Printnet – the internet newsletter of the Printing Industries Association of Australia – and are proud to have won a number of Printing Industries Craftsmanship Awards.

But, whatever the award successes, we like to think that the real winners are our students and the industry operators who are astute enough to employ them.
