Name:

Peter Baskerville

What is your teaching focus?

Business

Where did you grow up?

Brisbane

Complete this sentence - I learnt everything I know about this subject from -

Twenty years of starting and operating twenty-five of my own businesses in retail and hospitality, as well as the five years I spent as a Senior Analyst for a merchant bank helping other entrepreneurs develop their concepts.

What's been your career highlight so far?

Conceiving and developing two chains of ten stores in both retail and hospitality as well as the entrepreneurial training programs for Southbank, including being the course writer for the Vocational Graduate Certificate in Entrepreneurship.

How do you keep at the top of your field?

The continued development and growth of the education programs both in delivery innovations and product development is the core competency in entrepreneurial activity. I work closely with past graduates as a mentor/coach to assist them in achieving their dreams. I am also continuing to develop my own businesses in hospitality and online e-books.

What makes the course you teach so special?

The emphasis is on gaining new skills and confidence rather than just a formal recognition of information gained. It is taught in the 'real world' with students developing a concept and business plan for their own idea. During the course students are introduced to more than twenty-five other entrepreneurs and professionals who make presentations throughout the term at workshops and mentor nights.

What gives students of your course the edge when they graduate?

The assessment (The Business Plan) is also the key to the real world of entrepreneurship. The completion of the diploma is not the end for our graduates - it is just the beginning of life training in entrepreneurship. Graduates can join the alumni group, participate in future special events and have access to coaching support via the Enterprise Centre. The Enterprise Centre seeks to connect past graduates with industry support and assistance.

The best thing about teaching is...

The appreciation received from students who have been saved from making the same mistakes that myself and many others (who did not have access to a course like this) made.

2008 at SBIT will be...

A year of innovation and development with 'lunch time' seminars, mentor night dinners, weekend workshops, an additional coaching support course, an alumni group for past graduates and introduction of the Graduate Certificate in Entrepreneurship.
