Monthly reporting system

The company initiated a requirement for supervisors to write monthly reports to management. This was a new skill for the supervisory staff.

The Communication @ Work trainer ran training sessions based on the report. she worked through a model of the report with the supervisors, explaining how it was structured and highlighting the language used in it. Then together she and the group created a new report on a different topic, following the same structure and key language. The supervisors could use these models as a basis for their future writing. The Communication @ Work trainer was on-site to assist the supervisors personally if they needed her.

As a result of the training, supervisors gained confidence in writing not only this report but also other workplace documents. Management received the information that they needed and potential misunderstandings of poorly or unwritten reports were avoided. The models remained as a resource for future supervisors.

Teamwork and communication skills for multicultural employees

The company employed a considerable number of workers from non-English speaking backgrounds. Management wanted the employees to have a clearer idea of their role in the company and develop better teamwork and communication skills.

The Communication @ Work trainer helped the workers to understand how productivity was measured on their line. Together they looked at approaches to work that could increase productivity and also work practices that could have a negative impact. The workers learned how their job fitted into the context of the organisation, and came to understand the importance of passing on information to each other and to management. The Communication @ Work trainer also helped them to understand written materials by rewriting safety principles in plain English.

As a result there was less wastage of raw materials on the job. Productivity increased and the workers developed a greater understanding of their role in the organisation.
