What is a PPP?

  • A Public Private Partnership is a form of contractual arrangement between Government and the private sector which harnesses the skills and capability of the private sector in designing, constructing, operating, maintaining and financing major infrastructure projects.

One of the key characteristics of a Public Private Partnership is that the Government maintains control of the infrastructure by monitoring the performance of the private sector. The Government makes payments based on a performance regime and if necessary, can 'step-in' to ensure services are delivered. A Public Private Partnership brings new incentives to the private sector to deliver infrastructure as payments do not commence until the facilities are ready for operation.

This is an exciting year for Southbank Institute of Technology. Since 2005, the Institute has been engaged in a $550m redevelopment project to create a world-class facility at its Southbank campus.

The first of our new buildings opened in January and has been custom-designed to provide industry-modeled and IT-integrated workspaces to enhance students' learning experiences. Students in Butchery, Floristry, and Retail Training started classes in time for semester one.

Construction work on other buildings is ahead of schedule. The Design Technology building will open during semester one, offering Graphic Design, Multimedia, Photography, Animation and Civil Engineering students a comprehensive range of up-to-date facilities to prepare them for the workforce.

During Semester two, students in Performing Arts and the Indigenous Australian People's Unit will begin accessing their new facilities, including a 550-seat auditorium, multi-mode classrooms, and theatre-space.

Students in the Health, Human Services and Applied Science Faculty can expect to benefit from a major refurbishment of their facilities during the year. This refurbishment includes the development of a hospital-replica nursing ward, operating theatre, and dental prosthetic surgery to help us build on our role as Queensland's lead vocational institute for Health and Biotechnology.

Apart from educational excellence, the Institute is setting new standards for environmentally-friendly training facilities, through the implementation of waste management and water conservation facilities that help to generate energy savings.

We will also help to welcome community members and international visitors to Southbank by providing shop-front access to student retail training outlets and a range of new cafés, bookstores, an international food court, and 1200 square metres of retail and office space.

At Southbank Institute of Technology, we're putting the future first.
