Study Support Scholarship - Terms and Conditions

Value
Each Study Support Scholarship will be valued at the enrolment cost of the recipient’s selected program for each course for Semester 1, 2010 only. Any additional costs, including travel, materials or tools of trade such as uniforms, books or equipment required as part of the program will be the recipient’s responsibility. For programs that articulate directly into a university degree program, the scholarship will cover only the Southbank Institute components of the program for the semester.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- be a continuing (current) student, enrolled and studying towards a Southbank Institute Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Vocational Graduate Certificate or Vocational Graduate Diploma, and be commencing this program in Semester 1, 2010;
- be enrolled for the first time at, or above, the level of the program;
- be currently studying full-time (or have an exceptional reason for studying part-time);
- be an Australian Citizen or holder of a permanent Australian visa;
- have achieved competencies in all courses across their current program (for which the scholarship is applied for) in the semester prior to applying for the scholarship;
- meet the low income or educational disadvantage criteria;
- be nominated for a Study Support Scholarship by one of their teachers within their current program;
- not have any outstanding fees on their student account;
- not have previously received a Southbank Institute scholarship or bursary, or had a scholarship or bursary from the Institute withdrawn.
Definitions
Southbank Institute defines the following situations as "low income":
- Applicants on a Centrelink benefit paid directly to the applicant (e.g. Youth Allowance, Austudy, Abstudy); or
- Applicants not considered independent by Centrelink from their parents and their parents are in receipt of a Centrelink benefit based on low income; or
- Applicants not in receipt of any Centrelink benefit who can demonstrate and provide proof of low income.
Southbank Institute defines the following individuals as at "educational disadvantage":
- Applicants with a disability
- Applicants who currently live in, or have moved from, a rural/remote area to study
- Applicants from an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island descent
- Applicants with English as a Second Language
- Female applicants enrolling in non-traditional industries
- Applicants with significant caring responsibilities
Conditions
- Successful applicants will not receive any money from the Institute. The value of the scholarship will be recorded on the student’s account with the enrolment cost being funded by the Institute upon enrolment for Semester 1, 2010. Students are not required to pay back any fees in the event of withdrawal/forfeiture.
- Scholarship recipients must maintain satisfactory academic progress throughout their program in order to retain their scholarship.
- Scholarships are not transferable to other students, institutes or for other Southbank Institute Programs in any circumstances.
- Southbank Institute reserves the right not to award all or some of the scholarships in a given year.
- Maximum of 10 short-listed applicants.
- Scholarships cannot be backdated.
Selection Criteria
Selection will be based on:
- evidence of academic achievement in current Southbank Institute Program
- evidence of low income / educational disadvantage
- personal statement addressing questions as to why the applicant believes they should be the recipient of a Southbank Institute Study Support Scholarship. Responses will be marked against the following sub-criteria:
- academic potential;
- personal maturity and character;
- commitment to study;
- ability to overcome challenges;
- personal achievements;
- feedback provided from nominated Southbank Institute teacher referee;
- outcome of scheduled interview - if required.

- Scholarship Applications for 2010 are now closed
- Complete the 'Eligibility Checklist' at the beginning of the application form to ascertain whether or not you are eligible to apply.
- Complete the application form electronically.
- Please note: You must be nominated for this scholarship by one of your teachers within your current program. Nominating teachers must do this by completing a Teacher Nomination Form, and submitting this electronically directly to the Scholarships Coordinator.
- Print out your completed application form and attach all relevant documentary evidence -certified copies must be attached where indicated.
- Sign the declaration and submit to:

Closing Date
The closing date for Semester 1, 2010 Study Support Scholarship applications will be 5pm Friday 13 November 2009.
