Expectations of STEP Students
Upon commencement at Southbank Institute STEP students will be required to attend their STEP orientation, which is an opportunity to understand the requirements of the STEP program, and meet teachers. Orientation information and dates will be sent to STEP students once their enrolment has been confirmed.
STEP students will be required to be on campus at Southbank Institute one day per week for up to 8 hours. There are some programs that require further training or vocational placement during the school holidays. For example, a student studying the Diploma of Fitness, will be required to work in the Southbank gym for between 7 and 10 hours at the end of each semester break. Please refer to your STEP brochure for more information.
STEP students will be required to attend all classes stated in their chosen diploma over years 11 and 12. The outcomes of the program are dependent on this attendance as delivery of course content is planned weekly over the academic calendar. Interruptions to attendance will impact on learning outcomes. Students should only consider applying for STEP if they are able to make this ongoing commitment of weekly attendance for the duration of STEP.
Students are expected to be punctual to class and repeated lateness or requests to leave early due to transport will not be accepted. Attendance is tracked and reported to schools on a weekly basis.
As an adult learning environment, Southbank Institute anticipates STEP students will ‘step up’ to the challenge of taking responsibility for their learning and conduct. Students are expected to act appropriately, and with consideration of other students whilst on campus and abide by Southbank Institute of Technology's student rules.
STEP students may on occasion need to wear protective clothing or workplace uniforms whilst on campus. Otherwise, Southbank Institute promotes that students wear suitable everyday attire when on campus, as part of their STEP experience.
STEP students will not be permitted to remain on campus after 4:30pm on any day, except
- where the student's school has made prior arrangements with Southbank Institute to provide the appropriate supervision of the student; or
- where the student's Parent or Guardian has provided their school with written consent.
Furthermore, it is the responsibility of the school, Parent/Guardian and student to ensure appropriate and safe transport arrangements to and from Southbank Institute of Technology, or other training venues required as part of their STEP experience.
Academic Progress
Academic progress is managed via the VET Academic Performance Policy. Students considered ‘at risk’, or those who have received any M results will be identified and contacted. An ongoing pattern of unsuccessful performance will be discussed with schools, and may result in exclusion from the program. Some units require ‘pre-requisites’ which are subjects needed for enrolment, M results can hinder this progress, and a student's ability to move on in their STEP program, or achieve specified outcomes.
Unsuccessful unit achievement will require re-enrolment once a student has transitioned to full-time studies. Planned STEP delivery does not allow a secondary attempt during the STEP component of study.
