Health and Safety
Southbank Institute has an obligation to ensure the health and safety of all students and staff in accordance with the Workplace Health & Safety Act 1995. Our students are similarly obliged to behave appropriately in order to keep our campus safe and incident-free.
Students must not:
- engage in any behaviour that endangers or is detrimental to the health and safety of others
- engage in any form of harassment, whether based on gender, race, age, sexual preference or religious belief (we have students from all over the world and from many differing religious and cultural backgrounds - be tolerant of others - they are here for the same reasons as yourself).
- wilfully damage or improperly deal with/use any institute property, or the property of any person within the institute
- assault or attempt to assault any person within the institute
- be drunk and disorderly on campus
- be found to be under the infl uence of prohibited drugs and/or substances as defi ned in the Queensland Criminal Code
- be found to be in possession of a weapon on their person or use an object as a weapon to threaten or intimidate another person
- verbally abuse or use offensive language or body gestures against other students or staff within the institute
- smoke cigarettes within institute buildings - this includes doorways, rooftops, fire escapes, balconies, basement carparks etc (anywhere within the perimeter of a building or within five metres of a doorway or anywhere other persons may have to pass through your cigarette smoke to enter or leave a building)
- refuse to obey a safety direction given by the teacher or institute staff member
- disregard appropriate safety clothing and health/hygiene standards. No bare feet, no thongs and no singlets allowed on campus.
In general, students should do their best to help keep the campus safe. For example, any events or incidents that may impact on the health and safety of yourself or others should be reported, no matter how minor. Similarly, if you drop food or drinks in a walkway or on steps (slipping hazard), make an effort to clean it up or have it cleaned up as soon as possible and try to prevent others from walking in it in the meantime (perhaps use a chair as a barrier, for example).
Follow the health and safety instructions of your teacher and institute staff at all times.
If you are involved in or witness an accident
The institute recognises that, from time to time, accidents may occur. If you are involved in any dangerous or potentially dangerous incident or suffer an injury that requires fi rst aid treatment, please report it to your teacher immediately.
A written report of the incident must be made by your teacher on Form EV010 - Injury/Incident Report. You will be asked to provide personal details (e.g. name, address, contact number etc) and details of the incident.
This action will ensure that the incident/injury will be investigated by qualified personnel and actions taken to reduce the likelihood of a recurrence.
Remember, near-misses need to be reported too - the next person may not be so lucky!
If a student (or anyone else) requires urgent medical treatment, for whatever reason while on institute property, an ambulance is to be called immediately. There will be no cost for ambulance transportation.
If the injury can be dealt with easily by first aid, first aid is to be provided and then the casualty is to be transported to the nearest hospital by institute vehicle or taxi.
Evacuation drills
Southbank Institute is required to conduct two (2) emergency evacuation drills during the year.
These drills will not be advertised in any way prior to the event and, as with any alarm situation, should be treated as a genuine emergency evacuation. Remember, the absence of smoke does not indicate the absence of a threat.
At all times during an evacuation, stay together as a group and follow the directions of your teacher and/or the emergency evacuation personnel (red helmets), institute staff and security staff.
You should take with you only personal items or valuables when evacuating the building. Personal items include items such as handbags, purses/wallets, mobile phones. They do not include books, note pads or writing implements. Briefcases, knapsacks/backpacks and other bulky items should be left in the room.
Please take the time to familiarise yourself with the evacuation routes, fire alarm call points (red break-glass alarm boxes), fire extinguishers and first-aid facilities.
Emergency evacuation plans can be found on each floor of your building-please take the time to read them. You will be advised of the evacuation route for your building(s) during the first two weeks of your attendance.
